Project overview

A leading UK University technology research facility appointed CPS to design and deliver a fully bespoke UPS and generator package. To ensure total protection for their critical laboratory operations. Even the slightest downtime risked causing irreversible damage to sensitive research, so uninterrupted power was essential.

The client engaged CPS from the very beginning of the design phase. Our team supported them throughout, attending multiple site meetings during pre-design, design, and installation phases. A dedicated project manager oversaw the works to ensure the process ran smoothly from concept through to final commissioning.

The agreed lead time was 8–14 weeks, covering design, manufacture, installation, and final client sign-off.

Project scope

CPS decommissioned the client’s existing UPS and generator system before installing a brand-new solution tailored to the site’s requirements. To mitigate downtime risks during installation, a temporary rental set was deployed on-site. This ensured seamless cover in the event of a mains failure.

Testing and quality assurance were built into every stage, with the project including both Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT). Our engineers also carried out load bank testing to validate system performance under full load conditions before final handover.

Due to the critical nature of the facility, we worked out-of-hours to ensure the laboratory remained protected. Additional resilience was provided with a bespoke fuel storage and polishing system, advanced remote monitoring, and a full synchronisation package for operational flexibility. The synchronisation system was designed to panel sync directly with the LV mains switchgear. Allowing a seamless, no-break return to mains supply once restored and ensuring the lab’s sensitive research equipment remained unaffected by changeovers.

This project demonstrates CPS’s ability to deliver end-to-end UK critical power solutions for highly sensitive environments. From decommissioning through to installation, commissioning, and after-sales support, we ensured the client’s technology lab now has a resilient, fully compliant power solution that guarantees seamless operation.

We are grateful to the client for their trust throughout this project and look forward to continuing our partnership. With a new service agreement already in place and future works planned.
