Project details
Client: NHS healthcare facility
Sector: Healthcare / Critical Infrastructure
Location: UK
Solution: N+1 standby power system – 2 × 1500kVA synchronised diesel generators
Lead Time: 12–18 weeks (including design, manufacture, installation and handover)
Project overview
We delivered a fully energised bespoke N+1 standby generator solution to provide complete backup power to a prestigious NHS energy centre site. The project was developed in collaboration with the appointed design consultant and M&E contractor, with all parties new to CPS.
From initial consultation through to commissioning, CPS provided full generator design support, technical consultancy and on-site assessment. This was to ensure the emergency power system met the operational and compliance requirements of a live healthcare environment.

Project scope
The NHS facility required a fully resilient backup power solution capable of supporting the entire site during mains failure. A detailed site visit was carried out prior to quotation and system specification, with the CPS Technical Senior Management Team. Assessing access routes, room configuration, acoustic limitations, electrical infrastructure and installation logistics. CPS specified and delivered two 1500kVA diesel generators operating in a synchronised N+1 configuration. This ensures redundancy, resilience and uninterrupted power continuity across critical and non-critical systems. In healthcare, this level of generator redundancy is essential to safeguard patient care, clinical operations and life-saving medical equipment.
Each generator was built to WHTM standards using a high-performance G3 Rated Cummins diesel engine coupled with a Stamford alternator, providing proven reliability, load acceptance capability and consistent voltage stability, essential in healthcare environments where sensitive medical equipment must remain protected.
The synchronisation and load-sharing functionality was controlled via the via the DSE8610 MKII controllers. Each set was fitted with 2x DSE8610 MKII controllers per set, for additional N+1 if a controller failed over, the over controller will automatically take over. Configured as sync-ready with no-break return capability and full G99 compliance. We also provided the DSE8660 MKII controller systems for the switchgear and programmed them for full integration to the sets. This advanced control system enables seamless generator synchronisation, automatic mains failure response and smooth retransfer to grid supply without interruption, a critical feature for hospital-wide power continuity.
To meet strict site-specific acoustic, fuel storage and operational requirements, the generators were supplied with a range of bespoke upgrades. These included advanced attenuation packages achieving 75dBA at 1 metre, incorporating bespoke silencers and motorised louvres to control airflow while maintaining noise compliance. The system was supported by a 30,000L Western Global external fuel tank complete with bund alarms and full BMS integration, alongside a duty/standby fuel transfer system to ensure continuous and reliable fuel supply. In addition, each generator was equipped with 10-hour bunded base fuel tanks with integrated bund alarms, providing further on-site resilience and environmental protection.
Full design approval was secured with the Trust prior to manufacture. Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) was conducted with client representatives in attendance, including live G3 load testing and performance reporting. Feedback during FAT was extremely positive, with the client expressing confidence in the generator performance, stability and reporting accuracy.
The manufacturing, fabrication and electrical integration stages were delivered with exceptional attention to detail by the CPS production teams. Despite logistical challenges associated with manoeuvring large 1500kVA generator sets into the building, CPS appointed a specialist lift-and-shift contractor. Who safely positioned the equipment within the plant room. Careful coordination ensured the project remained on schedule and met all agreed programme milestones.
Challenges
During installation, minor fuel pipework snagging was identified and proactively resolved ahead of Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), demonstrating CPS’s commitment to quality control and ensuring seamless project progression. The full scope, from design and procurement through to installation, commissioning and handover, was completed within the 12–18 week lead time.
A key consideration identified during the initial site survey was strict noise restrictions due to the generator room’s proximity to active hospital wards. Standard acoustic silencer arrangements were not suitable, as the room configuration prevented suspension from the internal roof structure.
To address this, our engineers fabricated a silencer frame solution tailored specifically to the space constraints of the plant room. This custom acoustic design ensured compliance with healthcare noise regulations while maintaining optimal exhaust performance and system efficiency.
Aftercare
Following commissioning, we have provided a full operational handover training alongside ongoing on-site maintenance support. Ensuring the NHS facility benefits from long-term generator reliability, regulatory compliance and emergency power resilience.
This project further strengthens CPS’s position as a trusted provider of healthcare standby power systems. Delivering compliant, high-capacity, synchronised generator solutions designed to protect critical NHS operations when grid power fails.
