Supporting NHS Energy Centres with Resilient Emergency Power delivery

Supporting NHS Energy Centres

Table of Contents

For an NHS facility, resilience is essential.

Hospitals, cancer treatment centres, research facilities and other healthcare environments depend on continuous power to maintain essential services, protect critical equipment and support patient care.

That places significant demands on the infrastructure behind them.

CPS works with NHS Trusts across the UK to design and deliver resilient Energy Centre and critical power solutions

taking responsibility for everything from initial design and technical planning through to manufacture, installation, commissioning and ongoing service.

With multiple NHS projects currently in delivery and further schemes secured, our role is increasingly extending beyond the supply of standby generators.

As The UK’s Trusted Critical Power Partner, we provide complete critical power delivery, backed by the engineering expertise, project management and responsive service required in live healthcare environments.

NHS Energy Centre

Critical Power at the Heart of NHS Energy Centres

An Energy Centre forms a crucial part of a hospital’s infrastructure.

Its purpose extends far beyond housing equipment. It brings together the systems required to maintain a dependable energy supply across the estate and provide resilience when normal supplies are interrupted.

Critical power therefore needs to be considered as part of the wider Energy Centre design.

Generator capacity, redundancy, fuel autonomy, control systems, electrical integration, acoustic performance, physical space and future maintenance requirements all need to work together.

CPS works alongside NHS estates teams, consultants, Tier 1 contractors and other project stakeholders to develop solutions around the specific requirements of each facility.

That can include:

  • Initial site surveys and technical consultation
  • Complete critical power design
  • Emergency call out response
  • Energy Centre design support
  • 3D General Arrangement drawings
  • LV schematics
  • Generator manufacture
  • Bespoke containerised generator systems
  • N+1 critical power configurations
  • Extended fuel autonomy
  • Control systems and associated infrastructure
  • Temporary generator provision
  • Decommissioning of existing systems
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Principal Contractor delivery
  • Contractor coordination and project management
  • Testing and handover
  • Planned servicing and ongoing technical support

This gives NHS clients one experienced partner responsible for critical power throughout the project lifecycle.

Complete NHS Energy Centre Project Delivery

Some of our current NHS projects go considerably further than generator supply.

On one major NHS Energy Centre project, CPS is acting as Principal Contractor and managing the complete delivery programme.

Our involvement began with the initial site survey and design works and extends through contractor coordination, project management and construction of the new Energy Centre room.

The generator set is being manufactured alongside the wider construction programme, allowing the different elements of the project to progress as one coordinated scheme.

For the Trust, this creates a single point of responsibility.

It provides greater visibility of the programme, greater control over delivery and clearer communication throughout the project.

In critical healthcare environments, that accountability matters.cost.

Designing Resilience into NHS Critical Power

Healthcare power infrastructure cannot simply respond to the expected.

It must be designed around what happens when something fails.

That is why redundancy forms an important part of many NHS critical power projects.

CPS is currently delivering a scheme for one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, supporting a new cancer treatment centre.

The generators are configured in an N+1 arrangement, providing the required standby power capacity with an additional level of resilience built into the solution.

Rather than treating backup generation as an isolated piece of equipment, the complete system has been engineered around the operational requirements of the facility.

The equipment is contained within one purpose-built enclosure, creating an integrated solution designed in line with relevant Health Technical Memorandum requirements.

The project is due for completion in September.

The UK’s Trusted Critical Power Partner for Healthcare

CPS is supporting NHS Trusts across the UK with increasingly complex Energy Centre and critical power projects.

From individual generator upgrades to new Energy Centres, containerised solutions and complete Principal Contractor delivery, we bring together the engineering, project management and service required to deliver critical infrastructure with confidence.

As Principal Contractors, our capabilities span:

Design. Manufacture. Project management. Installation. Commissioning. Service.

One partner, responsible throughout.

And as our relationships with NHS Trusts continue to grow, so does our commitment to providing the dependable power infrastructure healthcare facilities rely on every day.
